The 29-year-old was trailing fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet 7-6 (7-4) 1-0 when he went down and had to be assisted from the court in the semi-final.

Seeded 18th for the opening grand slam of the year, Simon is drawn to face big-hitting German Daniel Brands in the first round.

With the retirement, Gasquet advances to play Czech Tomas Berdych in the Kooyong final on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, Australian teenager Jordan Thompson upset Argentine Juan Monaco 6-4 6-2.

Spaniard Fernando Verdasco battled past another local teen in Nick Kyrgios 6-7 (2-7) 6-3 7-6 (7-4).
