Germany's Philipp Petzschner ensured his country's path to the Davis Cup quarter-finals with victory over Croatian Ivo Karlovic on Monday morning.

The tie was sent to a deciding fifth rubber after Marin Cilic kept Croatia alive with a 6-2 6-3 7-6 (8-6) win over Philipp Kohlschreiber, but Karlovic couldn't replicate his compatriot's performance as Germany moved into the last eight.

Karlovic had played in Saturday's doubles loss alongside Ivan Dodig, in which he broke the world record for the fastest serve of all time with a 156 mile-per-hour thunderbolt, but was unable to produce more heroics in Sunday's reverse singles, as he went down 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-5).

United States number one Andy Roddick sealed his country's path into the final eight with a four-set win over Chile's Paul Capdeville.

The US led 2-1 heading into the reverse singles after Bob and Mike Bryan clinched Saturday's doubles, and Roddick was able to fend off Capdeville 3-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 6-3 to seal Jim Courier's first match as American captain in style.

John Isner overran Guillermo Rivera-Aranguiz 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 in the dead rubber.

Viktor Troicki helped defending champions Serbia over the line against a gallant India, when he defeated Somdev Devvarman 6-4 6-2 7-5.

Janko Tipsarevic then thrashed Karan Rastogi 6-0 6-1 in the dead rubber.

France's Jeremy Chardy proved the hero again for his nation as he defeated Austria's Martin Fischer 2-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 6-3 to claim the tie 3-2.

Earlier, Austria had levelled the tie at 2-2 through Jurgen Melzer, who rebounded from his shock loss to Chardy in the opening rubber to down Gilles Simon 7-6 (9-7) 3-6 1-3 6-4 6-0.

Kazakhstan stunned Czech Republic 3-2 to seal their trip to the final eight, with Mikhail Kukushkin toppling Jan Hajek 6-4 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (10-8) 6-0 in the fifth rubber.

The Kazakh's team-mate Andrey Golubev earlier defeated world number seven Tomas Berdych 7-5 5-7 6-4 6-2 to square the tie at 2-2.

Argentina and Romania split the dead rubbers on Sunday, with Eduardo Schwank beating Victor Crivoi 7-6 (7-3) 6-2, and Adrian Ungur claiming Romania's only point of the tie when he defeated Juan Monaco 6-4 2-6 6-3.

World number one Rafael Nadal beat Olivier Rochus 6-4 6-2 in a dead rubber on Sunday, before Steve Darcis earned Belgium their only point against Spain when he overcame Feliciano Lopez 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (7-3).

Russia claimed two consolation points on Sunday, when they won the two dead rubbers against Sweden.

The Swedes had already wrapped up the tie after Saturday's doubles, but Dmitry Tursunov beat Simon Aspelin 7-5 6-2 and Igor Andreev defeated Joachim Johansson 7-6 (10-8) 6-4 to save face for the visitors in Boras.
