Ferrer overcame a third-set blip to post a 6-1 6-2 2-6 6-2 victory in two hours and 14 minutes at the Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Dzumhur was not allowed to get a foothold in the contest as Ferrer broke four straight times to win the first set in 22 minutes.

One sign of Ferrer's dominance was the fact he lost just two points on return in the first set, with a rout well and truly on the cards.

The pair then engaged in an almighty struggle early in the second set, as the first five games all went to deuce - and with serve - before Ferrer broke in the sixth and eighth games to go two sets up.

Dzumhur did finally convert some of his pressure into a lead, breaking in the first game of the third set.

Ferrer fended off points to go down a double break in the third game, and created his own break-back points in the fourth, but Dzumhur held firm, eventually breaking again late in the set before serving it out.

But if the Spaniard was flustered, he did not show it - breaking at the first attempt in the fourth to go 3-0 up in quick time and that buffer killed off the resistance of his 22-year-old opponent.

Next up for Ferrer is the winner of the clash between Australia's Bernard Tomic and Germany's Dustin Brown.
