Swiss second seed Federer barely raised a sweat as he disposed of Canadian wildcard Peter Polansky 6-2 6-0 in just 52 minutes.

In his first appearance since losing to Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final, Federer - given a bye into the second round - claimed all six of the break points presented to him by Polansky.

His first break came in the opening game with four consecutive points, only for Polansky to hit straight back on Federer's serve.

That was as good as it got for Polansky as Federer - a two-time champion and four-time finalist at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament - won 82 per cent of his first service points in the rout.

Next up for the world number three is either 15th seed Marin Cilic or Tunisian lucky loser Malek Jaziri, who upstaged Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-4 7-6 (8-6) in his first-round match.

Tuesday's only other second-round meeting saw compatriot and third seed Stanislas Wawrinka come from a set down to prevail 4-6 6-3 7-6 (7-2) against French qualifier Benoit Paire.

Kyrgios' rise in the tennis world continued as he overcame Colombia's Santiago Giraldo 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 in the first round.

The 19-year-old Australian, who reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, emerged triumphant in one hour 35 minutes to earn a second-round showdown with eighth seed Andy Murray.

Elsewhere in the first round, two-time runner-up and 12th seed Richard Gasquet downed Vasek Pospisil 7-5 7-5.

Fellow seeds Ernests Gulbis (11th), Fabio Fognini (16th) and Tommy Robredo (17th) also progressed to the next round.

Latvian Gulbis accounted for Portugal's Joao Sousa 6-3 6-4.

Italy's Fognini defeated Russian Mikhail Youzhny 6-4 6-3, while Spaniard Robredo got the better of German opponent Philipp Kohlschreiber courtesy of a 6-3 7-6 (7-3) victory.

Towering Croatian Ivo Karlovic rallied to beat Australian qualifier Bernard Tomic 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (8-6).

American wildcard Jack Sock won 6-1 6-3 against Austria's Jurgen Melzer, and countryman Donald Young was also victorious as he dismissed Canadian Frank Dancevic 5-7 6-0 6-3.

Czech veteran Radek Stepanek lost 6-3 7-5 to Frenchman Gael Monfils, and Gilles Simon was too strong for Dominic Thiem of Austria, winning 3-6 6-4 6-0.

Italian Andres Seppi defeated Canadian qualifier Brayden Schnur 6-3 6-3, while Taiwan's Lu Yen-Hsun edged Spaniard Marcel Granollers 7-6 (8-6) 7-5.
