Nick Kyrgios booked his third-round place a day before his second round clash with Kyle Edmund was due to start, with the young Briton forced to withdraw with a stomach injury on Wednesday.

Sam Stosur made short work of local hope Amandine Hesse, in what has been described as the most dominant display in Stosur's career.

She won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, and has set up a mouthwatering third round clash with defending champion and world number two, Maria Sharapova.

Meanwhile, men's second seed Roger Federer booked a first meeting with Damir Dzumhur after beating Marcel Granollers in the second round.

Federer will face the unknown in the third round after he set up the clash with Dzumhur, following a straight-sets win over Marcel Granollers.

The 23-year-old Dzumhur dispatched the big-serving Marcos Baghdatis 6-4 6-3 4-6 6-2 to equal his best performance at a grand slam, having also reached the third round at the 2014 Australian Open.

Stan Wawrinka is also through after he survived losing the third set against Dusan Lajovic, the Swiss settling into life in Paris with a 6-3 6-4 5-7 6-3 win, and he will now face Steve Johnson after his win over Sergiy Stakhovsky.

It was a good day for the majority of seeds in action with Kei Nishikori, Tomas Berdych, Gael Monfils, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Pablo Cuevas all victorious, however there were some who did not enjoy their second-round encounters.

Fernando Verdasco - the 32nd seed - looked to be on course for victory over Benjamin Becker as he led 2-1 in sets, but the German fought back to win a five-set thriller 6-4 0-6 1-6 7-5 10-8.

Frenchmen Benoit Paire and Nicolas Mahut also saw off seeded players with wins over Fabio Fognini and Ernests Gulbis respectively

There were second-round successes for Lukas Rosol, Gilles Simon, Teymuraz Gabashvili and Gilles Muller - the latter edging a five-set clash with Paolo Lorenzi.

But Philipp Kohlschreiber will have to come back on Thursday before he can claim a third-round spot, the German coming from two sets down to lead 1-6 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-3 4-2 against Pablo Andujar when bad light stopped play.
