'Everything was really good, except the match' - Gulbis

Ernests Gulbis - Cropped

A typically carefree Ernests Gulbis greeted the media following his limp defeat in the Monte Carlo Masters first round on Monday.

The oft-lax Latvian, ranked 17th in the world, continued his horrendous form in 2015, as his win-loss record worsened to 1-8 with a 6-0 6-1 loss to Andreas Haider-Maurer in Monaco.

In fact, Gulbis' form slump extends into the 2014 season - he has strung together consecutive victories on just two occasions since his eye-catching run to the French Open semi-finals.

Gulbis revealed a new coaching partnership with one-time world number four Thomas Enqvist prior to the clay-court event in Monte Carlo beginning.

And Gulbis said his preparation for the tournament - at which he has never progressed past the second round - was fine, before his woeful output on Monday.

"In practice I played very well," Gulbis said.

"I'm lacking confidence now on the court for the match. I was in a great state of mind this week practising.

"Every change is a good change. With Thomas, it was a really positive environment on the court. He gave me a boost. He pushed me.

"Everything was really good, except the match. This past hour was bad in Monte Carlo. All the rest of the week was really unbelievable."
