Svitolina through as Puig exits in Bogota

ElinaSvitolina - Cropped

Top seed Elina Svitolina overcame Irina Falconi in the Claro Open Colsanitas quarter-finals on Friday.

Ukraine's Svitolina had dropped just seven games on her way to the last eight, but she was tested more in a 6-3 7-5 victory over the eighth seed in Bogota.

In an even contest, Svitolina's ability to convert her chances was crucial.

The 20-year-old capitalised on her break points, taking four of five opportunities on her way to winning in one hour, 21 minutes.

Rain in Bogota saw matches delayed, but three of the four quarter-finals were completed on the clay courts.

Svitolina will face Teliana Pereira after the Brazilian eased past Spain's Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-0 6-4.

Puig, the second seed, was beaten by Kazakh Yaroslava Shvedova.

Shvedova broke serve three times on her way to a 7-6 (7-1) 6-2 victory over the Puerto Rican.

Her opponent is yet to be decided, with Mariana Duque-Marino and Julia Glushko unable to beat the darkness.

Colombian Duque-Marino is in control, however, leading the Israeli 7-5 3-1.
