Svitolina safely through in Bogota, Rogers dumped out

Elina Svitolina - Cropped

Top seed Elina Svitolina was untroubled in her Claro Open Colsanitas opener on Monday, dismissing American Louisa Chirico.

Svitolina, the lone top-50 player in the WTA International event's field at world number 27, enjoyed a 6-2 6-1 win on the Bogota clay courts.

The Ukrainian said her preparation for the event meant the conditions in Colombia were no hurdle.

"I've actually already adjusted to the altitude - I've been training here for two weeks," she said.

"But it's very difficult to play in Bogota, anyway. I was just able to play very well today."

Sixth seed Shelby Rogers suffered an early exit, as Lourdes Dominguez Lino dumped out the American 6-3 6-2.

Neither of the two local wildcards in action on Monday were able to progress past the first round, with Maria Herazo Gonzalez notably unlucky.

Herazo won eight of 10 games from early in the second set against Brazilian qualifier Beatriz Haddad Maia, but the latter fought back from a break deficit in the decider to win 6-3 2-6 7-6 (7-2).

The Colombian twice served for the match at 5-4 and 6-5, but was unable to convert on both occasions.

Her fellow local wildcard Yuliana Lizarazo was thoroughly beaten by German Tatjana Maria 6-3 6-2.

Maria's countrywoman Dinah Pfizenmaier was too good for Japanese stalwart Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-2 7-5.

Julia Glushko thrashed qualifier Nastja Kolar 6-3 6-1, and will meet either third seed Ajla Tomljanovic or Alexandra Panova next.
