Donna Vekic speaks about Kyrgios sledge

Donna Vekic

Vekic, who is dating Swiss tennis player Stan Wawrinka, was thrust into the public spotlight last week when Kyrgios told Wawrinka “Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend, sorry to tell you that, mate” during a match in Montreal.

Kyrgios has copped it from all corners since the off-colour remark, drawing criticism from Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and even NRL commentary legend Ray “Rabbits” Warren.

Now, Vekic has finally spoken.

"It's not easy but I'm trying to focus on tennis and my next match," Vekic told Canadian newspaper The Province.

While Wawrinka confronted Kyrgios in the changing rooms after their heated match and Kokkinakis reproached the Canberran a few days later, Vekic says she hasn’t yet spoken to him.

“I don’t know. I haven’t spoken to Kyrgios. But it’s a very disappointing thing to be happening in our sport and I hope it won’t happen again because it’s not a very good image for our sport.”

Kyrgios was fined $10,000 for the sledge, with the ATP looking into other forms of punishment.

Kokkinakis has also copped a bit of heat after the incident, almost getting into an on-court dust-up with American Ryan Harris last weekend.

Harris seemed to lump the two Aussies in the same lot, lashing out at Kokkinakis for what Kyrgios had done.
