Djokovic safely through in Monte Carlo

Novak Djokovic - Cropped

Novak Djokovic sailed into the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters with a 6-1 6-4 victory over qualifier Albert Ramos on Tuesday.

The Serbian top seed is gunning for his fourth Masters title in a row in Monaco, which would see him become the first man to win the first three ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events of the season.

Djokovic, who last won this event in 2013 to break eight years of Rafael Nadal dominance, outnumbered his opponent by three breaks to one as he dominated the opening set, while a single broken serve was enough to earn him the second - serving to love to put the match to bed.

The world number one will now meet Andreas Haider-Maurer, who got the better of Bernard Tomic 6-7 (7-4) 7-6 (7-5) 4-6.

Fifth seed David Ferrer was a set up on Victor Estrella Burgos when the Dominican retired hurt, while eigth seed Marin Cilic was a 6-3 3-6 6-3 victor against Florian Mayer.

While the top seeds were busy ensuring their places in the third round, much of Tuesday's action took place in the first.

Gilles Simon safely negotiated his meeting with sole Monaco representative Benjamin Balleret, winning 6-4 6-2 against the wildcard, while fellow Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was a 6-4 6-4 winner over Jan-Lennard Struff.

There was further French success as Gael Monfils and Jeremy Chardy defeated Andrey Kuznetsov (4-6 6-3 6-4) and Diego Schwartzman (7-5 6-2) respectively, while Lucas Pouille pulled off an early upset.

The 108th-ranked player triumphed 6-4 6-4 over Austria's Dominic Thiem to set up a second-round clash with third seed Nadal.

Chardy's reward for his win is a meeting with Roger Federer.

Spanish duo Tommy Robredo and Marcel Granollers also came through their first-round clashes with Andreas Seppi (6-3 1-6 6-4) and Adrian Mannarino (6-3 6-0) and will meet each other in the next stage.

Elsewhere, Juan Monaco will face defending champion Stanislas Wawrinka following a 6-4 6-2 win over Jiri Vesely, while Grigor Dimitrov beat Fernando Verdasco 6-4 4-6 6-4 and Viktor Troicki triumphed 7-6 (7-5) 5-7 6-2 over Martin Klizan.
