Djokovic eyes No.2

Serbian Novak Djokovic could replace Roger Federer at No.2 in the 2011 ATP Rankings this week.

Djokovic briefly reached a career-high ranking of number two on February 1 2010, but could reach the mark again if he can perform well at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, beginning on Wednesday.

The 2011 Australian Open winner has 7,800 points on the South African Airways 2011 ATP Rankings points, compared to Federer's 7,965.

The easiest way for Djokovic to claim the ranking is if he wins at Indian Wells, but if he reaches the final and Federer does not make the decider the Belgrade-born player can also go to number two.

The third scenario to cause a change will be if Djokovic makes the semi-finals and Federer cannot make the quarter-finals.

Djokovic will be confident of claiming the number two ranking given he has won 14 successive matches, but he will also be aware of the strength of his competitors at the event.

Not only is Federer contesting the US$4.5 million event - which is a combined ATP and WTA Masters series event - but Djokovic will also have to topple world number one Rafael Nadal if he is to win the title and continue his terrific unbeaten streak.
