The Serbian world number one did what was expected of him, crushing French journeyman Mathieu 6-1 6-3 6-0 on a warm day at Flushing Meadows.

Djokovic produced 13 aces, 33 winners and just 16 unforced errors in a comfortable display.

Mathieu, ranked 81 in the world, has now failed to take a set off Djokovic in five meetings since his only win over the seven-time grand slam champion - on carpet in 2006.

Favourite to win the title in New York, Djokovic faces big-serving American Sam Querrey in the third round.

Mathieu contributed to his own downfall, particularly early on, after seven double faults in a 29-minute first set.

The consistency of Djokovic meant he was never troubled during the second and Mathieu could win just six points in the third.

Djokovic holds a 7-1 win-loss record over Querrey, who eased past Spanish 28th seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, 6-3 6-4 6-4.
