The 2009 US Open champion has not competed at an ATP singles event since pulling out of the Dubai Tennis Championships in February due to a left wrist injury.
Del Potro's elongated rehabilitation from that problem has seen him miss all but one of the grand slam tournaments in 2014.
And, rather than taking part in the final few events of the year, the Argentine world number 29 has opted to focus his energy on making sure he is ready for the start of the 2015 season.
Del Potro wrote on his Facebook page: "Despite good progress through training and physiotherapy, I have decided not to play in the season ending tournaments in Europe.
"I'm going to use the time to get ready to make a difference next season. I'm not 100 per cent ready yet and need to be patient.
"Your [the fans] constant support and good wishes and care have been and will continue to be of the utmost importance along this journey.
"I am deeply thankful and I believe that next year I'll be able to repay you, doing what I do best."
