Del Potro delays tour return, out of Indian Wells

Juan Martin del Potro - Cropped

Juan Martin del Potro's return to the ATP World Tour has been further delayed, after he pulled out of the BNP Paribas Open on Monday.

The Argentine has played just five tournaments since the 2013 season, after ongoing issues with his left wrist - which troubled him after he played the Sydney International in January.

Del Potro did join his compatriots for their Davis Cup World Group tie triumph over Brazil in Buenos Aires, cheering from the sidelines and engaging in celebrations as they wrapped up a 3-2 victory on Monday.

A quarter-final appearance in Australia was his lone effort for the season, and despite flagging his return at Indian Wells for the ATP 1000 event, Del Potro will remain on the sidelines.

Del Potro - a 2013 finalist in Indian Wells - was offered a wildcard to the tournament, as his inactivity saw his ranking slip to 618 in the world.

His wildcard has been redistributed to Australian teenager Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Also late withdrawals from Indian Wells were Gael Monfils and David Goffin, after the pair were involved in Davis Cup action at the weekend.

Frenchman Monfils (knee) and Belgium's Goffin (rib) will be replaced in the main draw.
