The French world number 22 is the only seed left in the WTA International hard court event and is a win away from the final after seeing off Hsieh Su-Wei in straight sets.

Cornet will face Timea Bacsinszky next, looking to add to her title in Katowice earlier this year having proven too strong for her opponent - ranked 171st in the world.

In the pair's third career meeting, Hsieh started well as she sought a first victory over Cornet.

The wildcard from Chinese Taipei broke twice in the first set to lead 6-5, only for Cornet to hit back and move ahead in the match courtesy of a tie-break win where she came back from 5-4 down.

The second set was more straightforward for Cornet as she saved three of four break points to wrap up the match 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 in just short of two hours.

Chinese wildcard Wang Yafan continued her fine form in the competition by coming from a set down to see off compatriot qualifier Zhang Kai-Lin.

Wang caused a stir by beating top seed Samantha Stosur in the first round and moved into the semi-finals after a 3-6 6-2 6-2 win in which her opponent double-faulted 10 times.

Monica Niculescu is next up for Wang after the Romanian came out on top in her first career meeting with Monica Puig - the Romanian saving eight of 10 break points on her way to a 6-2 6-2 success. Puig dropped serve six times in total.

Bacsinszky and Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor rounded off the action on Guangzhou with the Swiss running out 6-2 6-3 winner having dropped serve just once in the match.
