Former world No.1 Kim Clijsters has pulled out of Wimbledon after suffering a recurrence of her foot injury at the Unicef Open.

Belgian Clijsters was sidelined from early April until the start of the French Open in late May after injuring her foot at a cousin's wedding.

The 28-year-old looked short of form and fitness at Roland Garros, bowing out to Arantxa Rus in the second round.

She was handed another second-round exit at the Unicef Open on Tuesday, going down in straight sets to Italian qualifier Romina Oprandi.

The defeat triggered a recurrence of the same foot injury and, after undergoing tests, the four-time Grand Slam winner has announced she will not be present at the All England Club next week.

Clijsters was to be seeded second for the tournament, but her withdrawal means all seeds move up one place, with Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova coming in at number 32.

"I'm very, very disappointed to have to withdraw from Wimbledon after injuring my foot again at the tournament in s'Hertogenbosch," Clijsters said.

"At this moment I feel frustrated that it has to happen now before one of my favourite tournaments."

"I've always enjoyed being a part of the Wimbledon atmosphere but I have no other choice now but to rest, recover and to not play tennis for a few weeks."

Clijsters' best finishes at Wimbledon were semi-final defeats in 2003 and 2006.

Her four slams came at the US Open in 2002, 2003 and 2010, together with a lone Australian Open crown earlier this year.
