The 14th seed became the first Croatian since his coach at Wimbledon in 2001 to win a grand slam title with a resounding 6-3 6-3 6-3 victory over Japan's Kei Nishikori.

Cilic was dominant in the decider at Flushing Meadows, and said Ivanisevic had brought enjoyment to his game.

"I don't know how I did it. It was hard work over the last few years," he said in an on-court interview.

"My team especially Goran has brought something to me. The most important thing he brought was to enjoy my tennis and have fun.

"It has been the best tournament of my life."

Nishikori never got going in the final as his 30 unforced errors proved costly in the straightforward loss.

The 24-year-old congratulated Cilic and said he was simply unable to play his game.

"He played really well today, I couldn't play my tennis," Nishikori said.

"I want to congratulate Marin. It's a tough loss, but I'm really happy. I want to thank my team. I'm sorry I couldn't get the trophy today."
