In the pair's first ever meeting, world number 437 Chan shocked her Thai opponent in the WTA 125 hard-court event in China, making light of the 339 places between them in the rankings.

Chan was stronger throughout, winning 72 per cent of points on her own serve to set up a second-round clash with Risa Ozaki, who advanced thanks to a 6-2 6-0 demolition of Hsieh Shu-ying.

Fourth seed Anna-Lena Friedsam also clinched a safe passage through to the next round, courtesy of a similarly dominant 6-2 6-0 win against China's Yuan Xin.

Freidsam will now come up against Petra Martic, the world number 226 who saw off Melinda Czink 7-5 6-4.

Seventh seed Kateryna Kozlova enjoyed a straightforward route into the second round, setting up a meeting with Ling Zhang after a 6-3 6-0 success over Lin Zhu.

Ling prevailed in a much tighter contest, getting the better of Sofia Shapatava 7-6 (7-2) 7-5.

In the only match on Monday to go the distance, Misa Eguchi got the better of Arina Rodionova 6-3 1-6 7-6 (7-3).

Elsewhere, Fangzhou Liu trounced Chinese compatriot Yafan Wang 6-1 6-0.
