Carlos Moya has announced his retirement from tennis due to a persistent foot injury.

The 34-year-old former French Open champion broke the news at a press conference today, bringing to an end a 15-year professional career which delivered 20 ATP titles.

Doctors had failed to settle on an effective course of treatment for Moya's ongoing right foot problem, and the Spaniard revealed he knew the game was up when he suffered a heavy loss to Benjamin Becker at the Madrid Masters in May.

"I wanted to play the big tournaments and say goodbye but I got to the Madrid tournament and I still wasn't 100%," Moya said. "I realised with that match that the moment had arrived.

"It's not how I dreamed of ending my career."

The former world number one's finest moment in the sport came with victory at the 1998 French Open. He also reached the final of the Australian Open in 1997 and was a member of the Spain team which won the 2004 Davis Cup.

Reflecting on what the future now holds, Moya added: "I'll keep on with my gym in Mallorca. I have a sports business and I'll dedicate more time to my wife, my daughter and my family.

"But I'll definitely miss tennis."
