Blake was 'body-slammed' to the ground and handcuffed by New York City police officers in the middle of the day.

He told Good Morning America that he is not treating the incident as a race issue and that his frustration comes with the excessive force used by the officers.

Blake said he was 'a little shaken up' and had some 'bumps and bruises' resulting from the incident outside a Manhattan hotel.

He believes the situation could have been much worse had he shown any sort of resistance.

"I'm happy that my reaction was that I was actually smiling at the person because I could see how if I put my arms up or if I did anything it could be a sign of showing some sort of resistance," he said

"Instead of having a little bruise on my leg I might have some broken bones or some actual injuries because it didn’t seem like he was slowing down and he was going to continue that tackle."

Blake did not get a name of any of the officers and that the man who tackled him had no visible police identification.

He added: "Immediately after it happened I was just … so shaken up I just didn’t want to hear anything or talk to anyone. I immediately talked to my wife and she said, ‘What if this happened to me?’ And immediately I was furious."

Blake said he was initially hesitant to share his story, but said his status gives him a platform that others do not have.

"I know that a lot of people have no voice to have any recourse and I’m lucky enough to have the opportunity to be sitting here to you. To be able to tell this story and let people know that this happens too happen."

He said the excessive use of force by the officers 'was so blatant'.

"I was standing there, doing nothing, not running, not resisting, in fact smiling," he said.

"If a video ever does come to the media you can see that I’m smiling. Just minutes earlier a reporter walking by recognised me and asked me a few questions."

The 35-year-old said he has not been offered an apology and called for those responsible to pay for their actions.

"No I haven’t heard anything, but I’d be surprised if they were making a concerted effort since I’ve been contacted by a lot of media sources that have been able to find my number and I haven’t heard anything from the police,

"I’d like an apology. I’d like an explanation for how they conducted themselves. I think we all need to be held accountable for our actions, and police as well. I do think that most cops are doing a great job, but when you police with reckless abandon you need to be held accountable.

"(Police doing)work the wrong way need to pay for those actions and be shown either the door or whatever they need to do to punish them."
