Spain, Argentina and Sweden all wrapped up their Davis Cup World Group first-round ties after the doubles rubbers.

One of the favourites to lift the Cup in 2011, Spain iced their tie when Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez combined to see off Belgium pairing Steve Darcis and Olivier Rochus 7-6 (7-0) 6-4 6-3 in 151 minutes in Charleroi.

Spain will likely meet the United States in the quarter-finals, with Jim Courier's men taking a 2-1 lead as number one ranked doubles players Mike and Bob Bryan beat Chile's Jorge Aguilar and Nicolas Massu 6-3 6-3 7-6 (7-4) in Santiago.

Argentina denied Romania any chance of a comeback in their tie, as Juan Ignacio Chela and Eduardo Schwank comfortably saw off the challenge of Victor Hanescu and Horia Tecau 6-2 7-6 (10-8) 6-1 in just over two hours.

The South Americans are likely to face the Czech Republic in the final eight, after Tomas Berdych and Lukas Dlouhy combined to beat Kazakhstan's Evgeny Korolev and Yuriy Schukin 6-4 6-4 7-6 (7-4) to give the hosts a 2-1 lead in Ostrava.

Sweden booked their ticket into the Cup quarter-finals when doubles specialists Simon Aspelin and Robert Lindstedt fought past Russia's Igor Kunitsyn and Dmitry Tursunov 6-4 6-7 (6-8) 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 in just under three-and-a-half hours before their adoring home fans in Boras.

The Robin Soderling-led Swedes are on course to face Serbia in the final eight, after the reigning champions took a 2-1 lead over India when Ilija Bozoljac and Nenad Zimonjic advanced past a brave Rohan Bopanna and Somdev Devvarman 4-6 6-3 6-4 7-6 (12-10).

Germany's Christopher Kas and Philipp Petzschner fought back from a deficit to overcome Croatia's Ivan Dodig and Ivo Karlovic 3-6 6-3 7-5 3-6 6-4 in three hours and 29 minutes in Zagreb.

Austria kept their Cup chances alive when Jurgen Melzer combined with Oliver Marach to see off France's Julien Benneteau and Michael Llodra 6-4 3-6 6-3 6-4 in 167 minutes, although France still lead the tie held at Vienna Airport's Hangar 3 2-1.
