Bernard Tomic withdraws from US Open

550. Bernard Tomic. Australia. Jan 15 2014

The Australian world number 67 was due to face number four seed David Ferrer on Friday but was unable to compete, handing the Spaniard a walkover.

Wildcard Tomic saw off Dustin Brown in the first round and would have met Gilles Simon or Federico Delbonis in the third round had he beaten Ferrer on Friday.

Tomic underwent surgery on his hip earlier this year, having retired from a first-round clash against Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open with a groin problem.

However, since the turn of the year, Tomic has clinched a title in Bogota and reached the final in Sydney.

Friday's meeting between Tomic and Ferrer would have been their third, with the Spaniard winning both previous ties.
