Berdych, who is seeking to reach the final in Sweden to add to his points tally in his push to qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals, lost just two points on his first serve as he claimed a 7-5 6-3 win over his German opponent.

The Czech won the ATP 250 tournament in 2012 and is keen to maintain his focus as he seeks a spot at the season-ending Finals at the o2 Arena in London.

"It's important for me to focus on myself, play good tennis and hit a clean ball," Berdych said. "I want to have [qualification] in my hands and decide it for myself."

And Berdych's path to the showpiece of the hard-court event is looking clearer after three seeds tumbled out on Thursday.

Fourth seed Alexandr Dolgopolov was defeated in a gruelling three-set encounter with France's Adrian Mannarino, the Ukrainian saving four match points only to lose 6-4 6-7 (2-7) 7-6 (7-4) in two hours 40 minutes.

France's Jeremy Chardy could not join his compatriot in the quarter-finals, the sixth seed losing 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 to American Jack Sock, while fifth seed Leonardo Mayer was beaten 7-6 (7-3) 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 by Germany's Matthias Bachinger.

The day's other contest saw Romanian Marius Copil win a battle of two qualifiers with a 6-4 6-3 success against Pierre-Hugues Herbert of France.
