Victoria Azarenka has the chance to clinch a third Qatar Open title after holding off Venus Williams in an entertaining semi-final contest on Friday.

Azarenka has previous in Doha having won the tournament in 2012 and 2013, and the Belarusian can add to that haul after securing a come-from-behind 2-6 6-2 6-4 victory over Williams.

A series of injuries has seen Azarenka slip to 48 in the WTA rankings, but she showed the sort of talent that saw her reach world number one and win three grand slam titles by defeating Caroline Wozniacki in the quarter-finals.

However, American Williams threatened to end her run after breaking twice in a first set that lasted just over 40 minutes.

Azarenka fought back in the second, though, and raced into a 4-0 lead in the decider as a bagel appeared on the cards.

Seventh seed Williams reduced the deficit with a break of her own in the eighth game before holding to trail 5-4, but Azarenka held her nerve to serve out for the win.

Awaiting in the final is Lucie Safarova, who was in majestic form in her 6-3 6-2 victory over ninth seed Carla Suarez Navarro.

Safarova was superb against Andrea Petkovic in the last eight and maintained her standard in the final-four showdown to come through in a time of one hour and 17 minutes.
