Defending champion Djokovic booked his place in the last eight with a regulation 6-3 6-0 6-2 fourth-round win over 15th-seeded Italian Fabio Fognini.

He then proceeded to launch into one of his trademark imitations – this time of coach and former star Boris Becker during a post-match courtside television interview.

But there was anything but the limp and dodgy serve he jokingly portrayed Becker with on show as he battered good mate Fognini in a tick over 90 minutes.

"I've been elevating my game as the tournament is going on … all the shots, using the court situation really well. That's what I've done really well today from the first to the last point," Djokovic said.

"I feel great about myself in this moment."

The Serb finished the match with an impressive 72 per cent of first serves landed, of which he won 38 of 43 points behind.

Djokovic is aiming for his fourth successive Australian Open title and fifth overall.

The world number two will face Stanislas Wawrinka in the final eight after the Swiss eighth seed overcame Spaniard Tommy Robredo 6-3 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-5) in the night session.

Robredo held an imposing 6-1 lead in career meetings with Wawrinka heading into this encounter, but the latter was unfazed by that stat as he kept the Spaniard at bay throughout the two hours and 23 minutes of match time.

The 31-year-old pushed Wawrinka on a number of occasions but lacked the killer blow to seriously threaten the Swiss who will now play in his first Australian Open quarter-final since 2011.

The world number eight won a staggering 90 per cent of first-serve points as opposed to Robredo's 70 per cent and hit 33 more winners (57-24) which compensated for him committing more unforced errors (37-22)

Wawrinka also benefitted from Robredo spending six-and-a-half hours more on court than him in the first three rounds.

The number eight seed is currently enjoying his best ever run in grand slams with three quarter-final appearances from his last four majors.

Meanwhile, third seed David Ferrer saw off a spirited challenge from German Florian Mayer to win 6-7 (5-7) 7-5 6-2 6-1.

Ferrer struck 64 winners to Mayer's 33, and overcame a big lapse in the second set, where he coughed up a 4-0 lead to see his opponent square the ledger at 5-5.

But Ferrer would go on to lose just three of the next 17 games, as he stormed into the quarter-finals.

Mayer will probably rue his inefficiency on his break-point chances, as he converted just three of 11, while Ferrer took nine of 19 opportunities to break.

Ferrer will meet Czech seventh seed Tomas Berdych in the quarter-finals.

Berdych swept to a comfortable straight-sets win over South African Kevin Anderson, the 19th seed.

Berdych won 6-2 6-2 6-3 in one hour and 58 minutes.
