Australia, England dominate in the pool in Glasgow

Leiston Pickett won Australia's first of the day in the women's 50-metre breaststroke, and soon after Thomas Fraser-Holmes added a second in the men's 200m freestyle as he finished 0.48 seconds clear of team-mate Cameron McEvoy.

Maddison Elliott set a new world record in the women's 100m freestyle S8 before the Australian men's 4x100m freestyle relay team completed a successful day in Glasgow.

England's Ben Proud edged the men's 50m butterfly final by 0.2secs from Ronald Schoeman of South Africa, and Chris Walker added a second English gold when winning the men's 100m backstroke.

Katerine Savard won Canada's only medal of the evening as she won the women's 100m butterfly, and home favourite Daniel Wallace won the men's 400m individual medley in a time of four minutes 11.20secs.

Meanwhile, Fran Halsall and Cate Campbell exchanged Games records in the 50m freestyle semi-finals, and Ross Murdoch topped the times in the men's 100m breaststroke semi-finals, where Michael Jamieson failed to make the final.

At the velodrome, there was more joy for Australia as Jack Bobridge retained his men's 4000m individual pursuit title, beating compatriot Alex Edmondson in the final.

That meant a second silver for the Edmondson family after Annettee lost her women's 3000m individual pursuit final to England's Joanna Rowsell earlier in the day.

Olympic gold medallist Jason Kenny was unable to add a Commonwealth title to his medal haul as New Zealand's Sam Webster proved too strong for him over three races in the men's sprint finals.

Meanwhile, Neil Fachie gave the home crowd something to cheer with his win the men's 1000m time trial B2 tandem.

England's Danny Williams completed a fairytale Games as he took gold in the men's under-73kgs Judo final against Adrian Leat.

Williams was a late call-up to the squad for the injured Ben Fletcher and he showed his quality with victory by waza-ari.

There were also victories for Owen Livesey in the men's under-81kg by shido, and ippon wins for Sarah Clark and Megan Fletcher in the women's under-63kg and under-70kg respectively.

In the weightlifting, Nigerian teenager Chika Amalaha's lift of 196kg was enough to take the women's 53kg event, while Dimitris Minasidis gave Cyprus gold glory in the men's under 62kg final as he lifted 276kg. 

Shun Xie Teo won Singapore's first gold of the Games in the women's 10m Air Pistol and Abhinav Bindra took the men's 10m Air Rifle with 205.3 points.

Australia's Laura Coles beat Elena Allen of Wales 14-13 in the women's skeet final, and Patricia Bezzoubenko climbed to the top of the podium in the all-around gymnastics final.

The badminton group phase continued on the penultimate day of the mixed team event with England, Singapore and India all maintaining their unbeaten records.

New Zealand's women hockey team produced a stunning 14-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago in the preliminary round, while Australia thrashed Wales 9-0.

England were the big winners in the netball competition with a 65-25 victory over Wales, and South Africa will meet the host nation in lawn bowls mixed pairs B2/B3 final after winning their semi-finals on Friday.

Squash world number two Nick Matthew moved into the quarter-finals of the men's competition with a 3-0 victory over Scotland's Alan Clyne, and in the table tennis, both the men's and women's team events completed the group section of the draw and began their first round matches.
