The Wimbledon champion had previously not made any comment on the issue but broke his silence on Twitter in the early hours of Thursday morning; the day of the historic vote.

Ironically, Murray lives in London and therefore will not be able to vote in the referendum but his support of the "yes campaign" will be a big boost to Scottish first minister Alex Salmond.

The result of the vote is going to be close with the latest poll, conducted by YouGov, showing 52 per cent of people are opposed to independence while 48 per cent agree with Murray that Scotland should standalone from the UK.
