A measured performance from Vera Zvonareva has been rewarded with a place in the semi-finals of the US Open.
The seventh-seeded Russian defeated Estonia's Kaia Kanepi 6-3 7-5 on Wednesday at Arthur Ashe Stadium, ensuring she is now just one win from a place in the final.
Zvonareva must play the winner of Caroline Wozniacki and Dominika Cibulkova to progress to the decider, but she has already achieved her best showing at Flushing Meadows.
Zvonareva coasted through the first set against Kanepi in 41 minutes, though she had to dig deeper to ensure a straight-sets win.
Kanepi hit more winners than her opponent (18 to 10), but the 31st-seed paid the price for 60 unforced errors.
