Croatian wildcard Petra Martic caused the upset of the day at the Open GDF Suez in Paris by ousting third-seeded Belgian Yanina Wickmayer.

Martic clinched her place in round two in the French capital with a hard-fought 6-4 3-6 7-5 victory over the 20-year-old world No.15.

Aravane Rezai, the fifth seed from France, also advanced with a straightforward 6-4 6-4 first-round triumph over Russian qualifier Evgeniya Rodina.

In the second round, top seed Elena Dementieva prevailed 6-4 6-4 in the all-Russian encounter with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova while Tathiana Garbin of Italy saw off another Russian, eighth seed Elena Vesnina, 6-4 2-6 6-2.

In the evening match, second-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta was made to struggle in the first set but breezed through the second en route to a 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 win over Russian Alisa Kleybanova.
