Rising star Bernard Tomic will become Australia's youngest ever Davis Cup player after he was named in the team to contest next month's Asia Oceania Zone Group One tie against Taiwan.
With Australia's top-ranked player Lleyton Hewitt sidelined until May following hip surgery, 17-year-old Tomic will join Peter Luczak, Carsten Ball and doubles specialist Paul Hanley in the team.
Tomic, who is ranked 210 in the world, carries good form into the tie, having won a Challenger tournament in Tasmania earlier this month following on from his second-round Australian Open performance where he lost to semi-finalist Marin Cilic in a five-set epic.
World No.75 Luczak and Tomic are likely to play singles with world No.122 Ball teaming up with Hanley in the doubles.
Matt Ebden has been named as a reserve, while youngsters Luke Saville and Ben Mitchell joining the squad as hitting partners.
"This is a crucial tie for us. Chinese Taipei has some talented young players and as we have seen before, anything can happen in Davis Cup," Davis Cup captain John Fitzgerald said.
"I'm very pleased with the make-up of our team and believe we have a good balance of experience and youth."
Coach Todd Woodbridge is looking forward to working with all the players in the lead up.
"Everybody is coming into the tie with a good Australian summer under their belt, and many of the boys have achieved their best ever individual results," he said.
"With that in mind it is my goal to work them hard on the practice court and have them as well prepared as possible so we can select the most in-form players."
The tie takes place at Melbourne Park from March 5-7.
