Young gun Bernard Tomic is through to the third round of the Australian Open after a gritty four-set victory over big-serving American Sam Querrey on Wednesday night.
Tomic looked to be in trouble when he dropped the first set in 24 minutes, but the 19-year-old found his best form quickly to register the 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 victory in a little over two hours and set up a third round encounter against No.13 seed Alexandr Dolgopolov.
Querrey's serve was on song right from the start, but as the match progressed Tomic began to read the American's main weapon with ease.
The vital moment came in the third set tie break when Tomic outfoxed his opponent with a series of cracking forehands from the back of the court to take the vital advantage.
Querrey attempted to fight back in the fourth set, but when Tomic gained the break in the eighth game it was all over as the Australian served it out with ease.
Tomic's ability to keep the ball in play frustrated Querrey throughout the match, with the American's 22 aces cancelled out by 52 errors.
If Tomic can get past Dolgopolov on Friday, he is likely to meet former world No.1 Roger Federer in the round of 16.
The news wasn't so good for fellow Australian Casey Dellacqua who was knocked out by No.3 seed Victoria Azarenka.
Dellacqua had the home fans that stayed on after the Tomic match cheering right from the start as she held serve in the opening game to setup an early lead.
But that was as good as it got for the wildcard as Azarenka quickly found her range from the back of the court to clinch the 6-1 6-0 triumph.
Dellacqua's unforced error count of 33 was never going to be enough to beat a player of Azarenka's quality, with the Australian unable to match it with her more fancied opponent.
Earlier in the day, Australian Olivia Rogowska was knocked out by No.5 seed Li Na in a one-sided second round match.
The world No.168, who came into the tournament as a wildcard, couldn't rediscover the form which saw her win her opening match against Sofia Arvidsson, making 29 unforced errors as the experienced French Open champion from China defeated her 6-2 6-2 in just 62 minutes.
Rogowska was broken in the second game of the first set and while she was able to immediately break back, handed back the momentum to Li with a terrible double fault on the fourth game.
The 20-year-old then faltered again in the eighth game of the set, double faulting twice, including on set point to fall behind.
While Rogowska, who had failed to make it past the first round in three previous appearances in Melbourne, was able to stick with Li early in the second set, she again cost herself with unforced errors.
Breaks in the sixth and eighth games saw the beaten finalist from last year power through to a third-round clash with No.26 seed Annabel Medina Garrigues, who thrashed Olga Govortsova 6-1 6-0.
