Australia's Samantha Stosur has been knocked out of the fourth round of the Australian Open, losing in straight sets to world No.1 Serena Williams on Monday afternoon.
The scoreline flattered the 13th seed, with Williams never really troubled in the 6-4 6-2 victory, which took just over an hour.
Stosur knew she had to serve well to be any chance of winning the match, but it was the Williams serve that proved decisive.
The American grabbed the only break of the opening set in the fifth game and lost just two points on serve in her five service games to close out the opening set in 32 minutes.
Williams then immediately had Stosur on the back foot in the second set, when she broke in the opening game.
The Australian finally made inroads on the Williams serve and earned three break points in the next game, but three monster serves from the top seed got her out of trouble.
The crowd tried their hardest to get the local hero back in the contest but there was no stopping the defending champion as she broke again in the seventh game to cruise into the last eight at Melbourne Park for the seventh time in her career.
Williams will play the winner of Monday night's match between seventh seed Victoria Azarenka and ninth seed Vera Zvonareva.
