The opening round of the VTR Open served up a pair of shocks as seeds Santiago Giraldo and Filippo Volandri both lost on Monday.

Colombian Giraldo, a beaten finalist at the ATP 250 event last year, suffered a 6-7 (5-7) 1-6 reverse to Argentine Leonardo Mayer in Vina del Mar, Chile.

In another first-round upset, Brazil's Joao Souza defeated number eight seed Volandri, edging the Italian 1-6 7-5 7-6 (7-5) in two hours and 53 minutes.

The main draw was completed after Rogerio Dutra Silva, Diego Junqueira, Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo and Federico Delbonis won their qualifiers.
