Defending champion Chanelle Scheepers cruised into the second round of the Guangzhou International Women's Open on Monday.

The South African fifth seed needed just 72 minutes to thrash Chinese wildcard Qiang Wang 6-0 6-3 on the hard-courts at the WTA International event.

Scheepers, who won her one and only WTA Tour title in Guangzhou last year, converted four of five break points in the comfortable win.

Awaiting her in the second round is Serbian Bojana Jovanovski, who easily overcame Hungarian Timea Babos 6-1 6-3.

Jovanovski needed just one hour and nine minutes to advance, taking advantage of six of her eight break-point chances.

Luxembourgian Mandy Minella was given a much sterner test on her way to the second round.

The world number 66 battled past Frenchwoman Pauline Parmentier 7-5 3-6 6-3 despite serving five double faults.

Parmentier served 10 double faults to go with her 10 aces, but her failure to take her chances - she converted just three of 14 break points - proved costly.

Brit Laura Robson was on court for just over an hour against Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor, leading 6-2 3-1 before the Spaniard retired.
