Safarova downed in Monterey

Eighth seed Lucie Safarova was a first-round casualty on the opening day of the Monterrey Open.

The Czech player began well enough but was then outplayed as she lost 5-7 6-4 6-4 to France's Julie Coin.

Canada's seventh seed Aleksandra Wozniak was gifted her place in round two after opponent Laura Granville retired injured from their match.

The pair were locked at 3-3 in the first set when American Granville was forced to quit due to a left wrist injury.

American Vania King came through her opener, defeating Czech player Sandra Zahlavova 4-6 7-5 6-3.
