Sam Stosur could be set for a meeting with top seed Victoria Azarenka in the quarter-finals at the French Open after the draw was released on Friday.

The No.6 seed and 2011 US Open champion faces Briton Elena Baltacha in the first round while world No.1 Azarenka meets Alberta Brianti.

Stosur's passage, should she make the quarters of the tournament she was a finalist at in 2010, will not be easy, with Nadia Petrova and 12th seed Sabine Lisicki potentially awaiting her in the third and fourth round respectively.

In the men's draw, Australian 25th seed Bernard Tomic will face a yet-to-be-determined qualifier in his first Grand Slam as a seeded player.

Tomic is in the same quarter of the draw as fourth seed Andy Murray and sixth seed David Ferrer.

Veteran Lleyton Hewitt faces clay specialist Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia in the opening round with the winner more than likely to face world No.1 Novak Djokovic in the next round.

Djokovic starts his campaign against Potito Starace of Italy.

The only other Australian in the men's draw, Matthew Ebden, is paired with 24th seed Philipp Kohlschreiber and is on Rafael Nadal's side of the draw.

Second seed Nadal, who has won a staggering 220 of 229 games on clay since 2005 and is gunning for his seventh Slam at Roland Garros, will take on Simone Bolelli in the first round.

Australian teenager Ashleigh Barty, in just her second Grand Slam appearance, was handed a tough opening draw in No.4 seed Czech Petra Kvitova.

Another to fly the flag, Casey Dellacqua, will go head-to-head with 21st seed Sara Errani in the opening round.

Men's third seed Roger Federer is pitted against Tobias Kamke and will face Djokovic in the semis should the pair progress.

Ferrer meets Slovak Lukas Lacko while Murray has Japan's Tatsuma Ito and fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga takes on a qualifier.

In the women's draw, reigning champion and seventh seed Li Na is up against Romanian Sorana Cirstea in the opening round with second seed Maria Sharapova paired with Alexandra Cadantu.

Fifth seed Serena Williams, who has won 17 of her past 18 matches, is up against Virginie Razzano and will meet Sharapova in the quarters if both progress.
