Australian Anastasia Rodionova barely raised a sweat before booking her spot in the second round of the Pattaya Open in Thailand.
Rodionova was leading 6-1 1-0 when her opponent seventh seed Kimiko Date Krumm was forced to retire with an ankle injury.
She will now play Russian Anna Chakvetadze in the second round.
In other first-round action Sania Mirza, the sixth seed from India, was also eliminated, with Tatjana Malek battling back to claim a 3-6 6-4 6-3 victory.
Third-seeded Russian Vera Dushevina and Austrian fifth seed Sybille Bammer fared better, however. Dushevina saw off Kazakhstan's Galina Voskoboeva 6-4 6-2 while Bammer edged New Zealand's Marina Erakovic 7-6 (10-8) 7-5.
Second seed Sabine Lisicki suffered a surprise exit from to home favourite Tamarine Tanasugarn in the second round.
The 32-year-old Thai triumphed 6-3 3-6 7-5 to claim her place in the quarters, where she was joined by Kazakh duo Yaroslava Shvedova and Sesil Karatantcheva.
Fourth seed Shvedova ousted South Africa's Chanelle Scheepers 7-6 (10-8) 6-3 while unseeded Karatantcheva cruised past eighth-seeded German Julia Goerges 6-2 6-1.
Meanwhile, Croatian wild card Petra Martic caused the upset of the day at the Open GDF Suez in Paris by ousting third-seeded Belgian Yanina Wickmayer.
Martic clinched her place in round two in the French capital with a hard-fought 6-4 3-6 7-5 victory over the 20-year-old world number 15.
Aravane Rezai, the fifth seed from France, also advanced with a straightforward 6-4 6-4 first-round triumph over Russian qualifier Evgeniya Rodina.
In the second round this afternoon, top seed Elena Dementieva prevailed 6-4 6-4 in the all-Russian encounter with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova while Tathiana Garbin of Italy saw off another Russian, eighth seed Elena Vesnina, 6-4 2-6 6-2.
In the evening match, second-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta was made to struggle in the first set but breezed through the second en route to a 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 win over Russian Alisa Kleybanova.
