Australian Alicia Molik has progressed to the second round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, but there was no such joy for compatriot Jelena Dokic.
Molik, who was granted a wildcard to the event, defeated German Tatjana Malek 6-1 6-3 in just over an hour.
The former world No.6 never had to face a break point on her serve, while she converted four of her eight opportunities to secure a convincing victory.
She will now play Spanish No.29 seed Anabel Medina Garrigues in the second round.
Dokic endured a much tougher time on court, losing to Russian Vera Dushevina 6-0 6-3 in 50 minutes.
Her serve let her down as she could only manage 39 percent of first serves in and committed nine double faults.
In other results, Australian Open runner-up Justine Henin was too good for Magdalaena Rybarikova, winning 6-2 6-2, while there were also wins for Sorana Cirstea, Patty Schnyder, Peng Shuai and Jill Craybas.
