Melzer continues Zagreb run

Melzer continues Zagreb run

02/02/2012 12:26:15 AM

World No.14 Jurgen Melzer charged into the third round of the Zagreb Indoors tournament on Wednesday.

The Austrian initially did not enter for the tournament, meaning he had to go through the qualifiers.

But Melzer decided to use the opportunity to test out a series of new racquets before qualifying for the main draw and he's clearly found some form, as he blitzed fifth-seed Andreas Seppi 6-2 6-3 in just 68 minutes in their second-round clash.

Melzer hit nine aces and won 70 percent of points on his first serve in his easy win against the Italian.

Top seed Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia was sent packing by German Michael Berrer, who won 6-4 6-4.

Ljubicic hit 11 aces and served well but Berrer made three crucial breaks of serve in his hard-fought victory.

The other second round match of the day saw Robin Haase of the Netherlands defeat Germany's Matthias Bachinger 7-6 (7-4) 3-6 6-3 in just under two hours.

There were four first-round matches also held on Wednesday, with Croatian Ivan Dodig toppling Turkey's Marsel Ilhan 7-6 (7-5) 7-5 in a gruelling contest.

Other winners to progress into the second round were Slovenia's Grega Zemlja, Israel's Dudi Sela and Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

In Montpellier meanwhile, Richard Gasquet progressed to the third round of the Open Sud de France on Wednesday with considerable ease.

The Frenchman was a 6-3 6-4 winner against Russian Nikolay Davydenko in just 86 minutes.

The fourth seed hit 10 aces and won 84 percent of points on his first serve in a dominant performance.

Gasquet broke three times from five opportunities to take a grip on the match and in the end he cruised to victory.

Gasquet's countryman, Gilles Simon, was also a straight-sets winner as he defeated Italian Flavio Cipolla 6-3 6-2.

Simon struggled to land his first serve throughout the match, but when he did, he served nine aces.

The second seed only received four break point chances, but impressively, he converted all four to seal his progression.

In other matches, German Philipp Kohlschreiber defeated France's Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-4 7-5 while wildcard Guillaume Rufin - also of France - continued his run with a 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 win against Spanish fifth seed Feliciano Lopez.
