Luczak out of Brasil Open

Australian Peter Luczak has been defeated in the first round of the Brasil Open in Costa do Sauipe on Tuesday.

Luczak took the first set against Juan Ignacio Chela in a tiebreak, but was unable to keep up his good form as the Argentine ran out a 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 6-4 victor.

Top seed Juan Carlos Ferrero defeated Eduardo Schwank of Argentina 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 to progress to a second round clash with Nicolas Massu.

Massu, from Chile, defeated qualifier Rogerio Dutra Da Silva of Brazil 6-4 3-6 6-4.

Third seed Thomaz Bellucci was a straight sets 6-2 7-5 winner over fellow Brazilian Thiago Alves, a wildcard, and will meet Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the next round.

Russia's Igor Andreev, the fourth seed, was a 6-2 6-2 victor over Potito Starace of Italy and sixth seed Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay defeated Filippo Volandri 6-4 6-3.

Fifth seed Victor Hanescu claimed a 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 win over Joao Souza, but seventh seed Horacio Zeballos will take no further part in the tournament after retiring with a hip problem while trailing Marcel Granollers of Spain 7-5 3-0.

Other first-round winners today were Lukasz Kubot of Poland, Fabio Fognini of Italy, Portugal's Frederico Gil, qualifier Rui Machado and wildcard Ricardo Hocevar.

Meanwhile, fourth seed Tommy Haas got through a tight first-round encounter at the SAP Open in San Jose.

Germany's Haas claimed a 6-4 7-6 (7-3) win over wildcard Devin Britton in one hour 13 minutes.

Sixth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany prevailed in three sets over American Rajeev Ram, winning 6-7 (7-9) 6-1 6-3.

Sam Querrey, the seventh seed, saw off Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili 6-3 6-2 in just under 55 minutes.

Eighth seed Jeremy Chardy of France was beaten 6-3 6-1 by Bjorn Phau of Germany and Robby Ginepri lost 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 6-3 to qualifier Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania.

Benjamin Becker of Germany beat qualifier Tim Smyczek of America 6-4 6-2 and Michael Russell of America beat South Korea's Im Kyu-Tae 7-6 (8-6) 6-1.

Im was a late replacement for Mardy Fish, who withdrew with a left knee injury.
