Federer battles through

03/15/2010 05:34:53 AM

Roger Federer made hard work of beating Victor Hanescu at the BNP Paribas Open, but eventually made it through to join Andy Murray in the third round.

Federer, who has won the title at Indian Wells twice in the past, committed 39 unforced errors before emerging a 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 winner.

Murray's final score of 6-4 6-4 against Andreas Seppi looked much more satisfactory, but that was not the case for the Scot, who admitted he would need to play much better to go any further in the tournament.

However, the men's field did suffer one major loss, as fifth seed Nikolay Davydenko has withdrawn after being diagnosed with a fracture in his left week. He could miss up to a month.

Davydenko had been due to face Viktor Troicki in the third round.

Sixth seed Robin Soderling beat Evgeny Korolev 6-2 6-4 to advance, while seventh-seeded Andy Roddick is also through, having beaten qualifier Yen-Hsun Lu 6-4 6-4.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, the ninth seed, is also through having beaten Marinko Matosevic 6-1 6-3.

Twelfth seed Gael Monfils is out, losing 1-6 6-2 6-3 to Simon Gruel, while James Blake knocked out 13th seed David Ferrer 6-1 6-4.

Jurgen Melzer knocked out David Nalbandian 6-4 6-1 while there were also wins for Mario Baghdatis, Tommy Robredo, Dudi Sela, Thiemo De Bakker, Michael Russell, Nicolas Almagro, Albert Montanes and Feliciano Lopez.
