Juan Martin Del Potro has advanced to the second round of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament with a 6-3 6-4 victory over Gael Monfils.

A break of serve in each set was enough for the Argentine second seed, who will face Latvian Ernests Gulbis in the next round in Rotterdam.

Monfils was broken in the second game of the match and had no answers as Del Potro comfortably held serve four times to clinch the first set.

The second set was a tighter affair as the world number seven fought off a break point early in the set and managed to break the Frenchman's serve to love in the ninth game - serving out the match comfortably in the next game.

Del Potro is looking to go one better than his runner-up finish to Roger Federer in last year's final.

Gulbis, who has slipped to 132 in the world after being as high as number 21, breezed to a 6-2 6-1 win over Dutchman Robin Haase.

In other first-round action, Russia's Mikhail Youzhny was forced to withdraw with a hip injury against Dutchman Thiemo de Bakker with the score at 6-3 6-7 1-4.

Youzhny looked in fine form claiming the first set before the injury started to get the better of him during the second set.

Frenchman Julien Benneteau had no trouble ousting lucky loser Tobias Kamke 6-3 6-2 after the German earned a reprieve following Michael Llodra's withdrawal because of illness.

In the final match of the day, Finland's Jarkko Nieminen took only 61 minutes to thrash Belgium's David Goffin 6-0 6-0.
