Cilic's Grand Slam quest

01/24/2010 12:20:29 PM

Croatia's Marin Cilic is attempting to become the second 21-year-old in succession to win a Grand Slam title.

Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro did it first at the US Open last September. Cilic has a chance to emulate that feat at the Australian Open.

The 14th seed did it the hard way on Sunday in a five-set thriller over del Potro, who was clearly drained after being on court for more than 15 hours and playing 18 sets in his four matches.

It was a measure of revenge for Cilic, who lost to del Potro at the same stage at Melbourne Park in 2009, while the world No.5 knocked him out in the quarter-finals last year en route to the title at Flushing Meadows.

The similarities between the pair are quite remarkable.

Both are 21 - del Potro is five days older.

They are the two youngest players in the current top 50.

Both stand 6 feet 6 in the old language or 198cm.

Both turned professional in 2005. Interestingly, they never met at Challenger or Futures level or on the ITF Junior Circuit.

Del Potro holds a slight edge in career titles (7-4) and overall win-loss record (141-69 to 112-71).

Cilic, though, has reached the round of 16 at all four majors. Del Potro has never been beyond the second round on the grass at Wimbledon.

The Croat will take a nine-match winning streak into his quarter-final after successfully defending his title at Chennai to open the 2010 season.

But he is yet to entertain thoughts of going all the way.

"I'm coming with good background. I played great matches, winning against del Potro also shows that I didn't go in that match, not to lose anything," he said.

"I mean, I'm coming here, came to quarters. Now I'm not going to let it go easy."

Coached by Australian Bob Brett, Cilic improved his year-end ranking for a fifth straight year to finish 2009 at a high of 14.

He won two hardcourt titles at Chennai and Zagreb and finished runner-up at Beijing and Vienna, while also leading his country to the Davis Cup semi-finals.

A winner of the French Open boys' singles in 2005, Cilic is clearly a player more than capable of tasting Grand Slam glory.

Only time will tell whether that comes at this year's Australian Open.
