Bogomolov fires up

Second seed Alex Bogomolov Jr brushed aside wild card Dino Marcan 6-3 6-1 to progress to the second round of the Zagreb Indoors on Tuesday.

Russian Bogomolov disposed of Marcan, who was making his ATP Tour debut.

Fellow Russian and third seed, Mikhail Youzhny, defeated Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-4 7-6 (7-4), needing the tie-breaker to clinch it after failing to capitalise on two match points at 5-4 in the second set.

Eighth seeded Croatian Ivo Karlovic saw off Blaz Kavcic 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 to set up a second round encounter with German Michael Berrer.

Berrer accounted for Marco Chiudinelli of Switzerland 7-6 (7-3) 6-1.

Marcos Baghdatis recovered from a slow start to defeat Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic 4-6 6-3 6-3 in just under two hours.

In an erratic match full of breaks of serve, the Cypriot failed to hold on four occasions.

Rosol was broken six times though as the sixth seed did just enough to win his way into the second round.

In other matches, Poland's Lukasz Kubot defeated Italian Matteo Viola 6-2 6-1 and Jurgen Melzer ousted Philipp Petzschner 6-1 6-3.
