Back-to-back titles for Venus

02/28/2010 03:26:41 AM

Venus Williams fought back from a set down to win the final of the the Abierto Mexicano Telcel tournament against teenager Polona Hercog.

Williams, the defending champion, won 2-6 6-2 6-3 in just over two hours to claim her second consecutive title after triumphing in Dubai last week.

It was the 29-year-old American's 43rd WTA career title and denied her 19-year-old Slovenian opponent a maiden success after Hercog reached her first ever final on the red clay in Acapulco.

Hercog, the world No.60, was quick out of the blocks as she broke Williams' opening service game before going on to claim the opening set.

Williams had been taken to three sets in her previous two matches to reach the final and had been on the verge of an early exit in her quarter-final against Laura Pios Tio when she somehow fought back after trailing 5-1 in the third set.

But like then the former world No.1 rallied against her inexperienced rival as she levelled the match in the second set, before claiming the decisive break in the sixth game of the third.
