In a fight between a man past his prime and a fighter who never had a prime, former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes scored a convincing 10-round unanimous decision over Eric "Butterbean" Esch.

Holmes dominated with stiff left jabs and numerous right crosses to close down Butterbean for most of the evening. Butterbean simply lacked the agility and skill to keep up with the fifty-two-year-old former World Champion. All three judges had Holmes winning on their scorecards, 98-91, 96-93, and 97-92.
