The boy, who plays for local club Papatoetoe, allegedly tackled a referee to the ground and punched him after being shown a yellow card for a high tackle during a game against Marist Eastern.

The match was abandoned after the incident with the player and referee needing to be separated.

An Auckland Rugby Union hearing will determine the boy's punishment with a spokesperson saying they were offering support to all parties.

The maximum penalty for this type of incident is a lifetime ban, the spokesperson said they didn't want the boy to " be hung out to dry."

She also said the boy was "obviously distraught" after the game.

Meanwhile the referee, who was not physically injured in the attack, is still "clearly affected", and has been "resting at home."

The spokesperson said Auckland Rugby Union wanted to change its perception of being rough and dirty.
