Australia will be without Rob Simmons for this week's Rugby Championship decider and Bledisloe Cup opener against New Zealand due to a wrist injury.

Simmons will undergo surgery on the scaphoid injury on Tuesday, ruling him out of Saturday's showdown in Sydney and the Bledisloe Cup in Auckland the following week.

No replacement has been called into Michael Cheika's squad for the 52-Test veteran, who is expected to make a full recovery before Australia's Rugby World Cup warm-up match against United States in Chicago next month.

"Obviously we're all disappointed to lose Rob," said Cheika. "However, we're confident he will make a full recovery ahead of Rugby World Cup.

"We've been able to build some real depth in the lock position, and Rob's injury presents an opportunity for another player in the squad to stake their claim."
