Rugby own try

It happened during the first half of Australia's National Rugby Championship between Sydney Stars and North Harbour Rays at Leichhardt Oval.

The Rays were fiercely defending their tryline from repeated attacks when prop Mitch Lewis stole the ball at the breakdown and planted it back for his team-mates to secure possession and kick for field position.

Where he placed the ball is where the confusion started.

Lewis planted the ball on his side's own tryline. Referee Ian Smith did not see the movement and called for the help of the television match official.

The call from the TMO was that it was a try with the official seemingly confusing Lewis for a Stars player.

The proper ruling should have been a five-metre scrum with the halfback feed and loosehead going to the Stars.
