Season hinges on Challenge Cup glory, says Twelvetrees

Gloucester's fading league form sees them head into the European Rugby Challenge Cup semi-final against Exeter Chiefs with renewed determination to lift the trophy.

David Humphreys' side have just one win from their last six Premiership fixtures, leaving them almost certainly requiring a play-off if they have designs on competiing in next year's Champions Cup.

However, sitting 10 points adrift of the seventh-placed finish that would secure them a play-off berth via the league, Challenge Cup glory now appears to be Gloucester's best chance of having a shot at a place in Europe's premier club competition.

"It's the biggest game of the year and everything is riding on it, in terms of play-offs, Europe next year and potentially getting a trophy," said centre Billy Twelvetrees.

"We're not where we want to be in the league but we know where we want to be and what kind of team we need to be to get there.

"We are potentially two games away from a play-off and that's massive for us in terms of where we want to go as a group of players. These are the games you want to play in and the reason we train hard.

"We want to play in these big European games at Kingsholm in front of passionate people - it's a massive game."

Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter, meanwhile, insists his players will not be intimidated by a hostile atmosphere at Kingsholm.

"A packed out Kingsholm with the conditions like they are now, it should be a fantastic place to go and play a game of rugby," said Baxter.

"We need to make sure we use that as our motivation and not let it worry us that we're going away from home. We've put in some big performances away from home this season and now we have to back it up and show we're not afraid to go out and win the game.

"The established clubs within the Premiership aim for these games year in, year out, so we have to make the most of these opportunities. I look at it like this - if you work this hard to get to this stage, then go out and make the most of it."

Gloucester are aiming for the second Challenge Cup final, having won the tournament in 2006, while Exeter - five places above their opponents in the Premiership - feature in the last four for the first time.

Chiefs won 25-22 on their last visit to Kingsholm in the league.
